When administered a single intramuscular dose of polyethylene glycol (PEG)-administered human recombinant IL-2 prior to subretinal MCMV challenge, mice with MAIDS demonstrated an extraordinary reduction in the amount of infectious MCMV intraocularly as well as in the frequency of MCMV retinitis when compared with control mice with MAIDS not treated with PEG-IL-2 [58].
