The variable expression of GTA could be explained by two major types of factors: on the one hand, high levels of estrogen and androgen, which increase telomerase activity via stimulation of the TERT promoter, and on the other hand, some factors such as oxidative stress, which are generated at a high level in PCOS patients, impair telomere length homeostasis or lead the cells to enter apoptosis via a non-canonical pathway, implying mitochondria dysfunction. Here, TERT is linked to polycystic ovary syndrome.
