EBV infection of pseudostratified respiratory nasopharyngeal epithelial cells (grown in air-liquid interface culture) also preferentially supports lytic EBV infection in differentiated suprabasal cells [39,40], although in this model system lytic EBV infection is not highly associated with either KLF4 or BLIMP1 expression [40] and some lytic gene expression occurs even in the undifferentiated basal cells [39]. This evidence concerns the gene PRDM1 and Epstein-Barr virus infection.
