Given the recent recommendation for SGLT2 inhibitors to be considered as key drugs for improving outcomes in patients with T2D at high cardiovascular risk or with CVD, regardless of previous metformin use [1, 2], the findings of our study may provide clinicians with novel insights on the effects of empagliflozin on a range of clinical parameters used frequently in the daily care of diabetes and cardiovascular disease, according to the patient’s prior use of metformin.
