The pathogenesis of both, allergic and irritant contact dermatitis is held to be driven, at least in part, by the activation of the NLR family pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome, an innate immune sensor and multimeric protein complex that initiates an inflammatory form of cell death and triggers the release of the proinflammatory cytokines IL‐1β and IL‐18. The gene discussed is IL18; the disease is contact dermatitis.
