CD4 and AIDS: Early antiretroviral therapy (ART) initiation; i.e. commencing ART immediately after the infection occurs [16] or as World Health Organization (WHO) defines: initiating ART at higher CD4 count and/or lower clinical stages [17] not only reduces the development of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and non-AIDS related comorbidities and mortality [18, 19], but also prevents transmission of HIV infection in the community by reducing viral concentration in people living with HIV (PLWH) [20, 21].
