The increased expression of SLC25A family members in distinct cell populations included multiple orphan transporters whose function is unclear, such as SLC25A30, SLC25A34, and SLC25A39 (Palmieri, 2013; Palmieri and Monné, 2016; Palmieri et al., 2020), and transporters linked to neurodevelopmental disorders, such as the citrate transporter SLC25A1 and those annotated in the SFARI database of autism spectrum-linked genes (Fig. 5B). This evidence concerns the gene SLC25A39 and neurodevelopmental disorder.
