The inactive ALDH2*2 allele (rs671), which results in slow acetaldehyde elimination, and the fast-metabolizing ADH1B*2 allele (rs1229984), which results in fast acetaldehyde production, both enhance alcohol-induced facial flushing [1–6] and are strong Asian protective factors against alcohol dependence [7–10]. This evidence concerns the gene ALDH2 and alcohol dependence.
