FGF2 and cancer: Indeed, during tumor growth, cancer cells release several angiogenic factors such as the Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) and the Fibroblast Growth Factor-2 (FGF-2) that dysregulate the homeostatic tissues equilibrium, causing the degradation of the endothelial basement membrane due to the activation of matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) [5].
