SLC5A1 and type 1 diabetes mellitus: Several medications of this class have been approved or are currently under development, the most prominent of which being canagliflozin (Figure 1), the first member of this class to be FDA-approved in 2013, dapagliflozin (Figure 1), which is also used (together with insulin) for T1DM treatment, empagliflozin (Figure 1), which has the highest selectivity for SGLT2 vs. SGLT1 among the agents in this class, ertugliflozin, and sotagliflozin, which is essentially a non-specific dual SGLT1/2 inhibitor.
