While periodontal disease and depression share a number of environmental risk factors such as age, low socioeconomic status, smoking and alcohol consumption, sleep deprivation36 and stress37,38, predisposition to chronic and aggressive periodontitis also shares common genetic polymorphisms with depression in relation to the genes for BDNF, CXCL10 and 5HTT57–59.
