It binds with high affinity to FGF2 (fibroblast growth factor‐2) and heparan sulfate proteoglycans, thus inhibiting angiogenesis and cell proliferation.54, 55 Elevated PTX3 levels were also reported in various cardiovascular diseases including pulmonary arterial hypertension,56 acute coronary syndrome,57 heart failure,58 and in advanced atherosclerotic plaques.59 This evidence concerns the gene PTX3 and acute coronary syndrome.
