In hyperhomocysteinemia, activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome has been shown to occur in the contexts of podocyte damage and glomerular sclerosis, and reductions of NADPH oxidase levels, knockdown of ASC, or inhibition of caspase-1 may have a protective effect (Zhang et al., 2012; Abais et al., 2013, 2014). This evidence concerns the gene CASP1 and glomerulosclerosis.
