Different kinds of cancer cells are known to secrete IL-6, a candidate mediator of cachexia, and IL-6 levels correlate with weight loss in some cancer patients (Scott et al., 1996; Moses et al., 2009); moreover, increasing levels of IL-6 in tumor-bearing mice correlated with the development of cachexia (Strassmann et al., 1992). This evidence concerns the gene IL6 and neoplasm.
