PROC and Hypoglycemia: Hypoglycemia resulted in alteration of the complement and coagulation cascades with an increase in thrombospondin, platelet factor 4, platelet basic protein (NAP-2 or PPBP), and vitamin K-dependent protein C. Vitamin K-dependent protein C functions as a natural anticoagulant to downregulate thrombin generation in the clotting cascade with cardioprotective properties (21), and therefore its elevation shown here may be seen to be protective.
