Analysis of gene expression involved in vitamin A metabolism showed that aldo-keto reductase family 1 member B10 (AKR1B10), the enzyme converting all-trans-retinaldehyde to retinol (Figure 1), is up-regulated in NASH patients compared with healthy controls, which is associated with elevated blood retinol levels (44). Here, AKR1B10 is linked to metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis.
