PROX1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus: Prospero-related homeobox 1 (PROX1) plays pivotal roles in the embryonic formation of several organs and tissues, including liver, pancreas, eye, lymphatic vessel, nerve and cardiac muscle in mice [1,2,3,4] and a meta-analysis of a genome-wide association study revealed that the rs340874 SNP in the PROX1 gene is associated with type 2 diabetes reported in an animal model in which PROX1 heterozygous adult mice become obese and had higher serum insulin levels and hepatic lipid accumulation.
