As expected, and consistent with the observation that primary liver injury and cholestasis are associated with intestinal mucosal hypoplasia [28], DDC-induced liver damage was associated with alterations in colon morphology (Figure 4A,B) and a reduced expression of the tight junction zonula occludens 1 (ZO-1) and the proliferation marker Ki-67 (Figure 4C). This evidence concerns the gene TJP1 and cholestasis.
