Homozygous deletion of P16 can be detected using FISH in both cytological and histological specimens [35]; however, the diagnostic sensitivity for MPM is relatively low at 0.53 (95% CI: 0.35–0.70), despite gene profiling studies demonstrating p16/CDKN2A loss in up to 80% of MPM tumours.
