The pathogen that causes COVID-19, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), invades hosts by hijacking the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) using its spike protein, followed by employing a host enzyme, transmembrane protease serine 2 (TMPRSS2), to prime the spike at the S2′ cleavage site to expose its hydrophobic fusion peptide for fusing with the membranes of host cells [3,4,5]. Here, ACE2 is linked to COVID-19.
