Interestingly, bufanidrine (2) and buphanisine (3) have previously been shown to have a strong affinity for the serotonin reuptake transport protein (SERT), suspected to be linked to the presence of the 1,3-dioxole moiety in the Amaryllidaceae alkaloids, which was considered to be responsible for their neuroprotective effects in AD [49,50,51]. This evidence concerns the gene SLC6A4 and Alzheimer disease.
