Using a population of cancer stem cells (CSC) from epithelial ovarian cancer, Pasto et al. [189] found that the expression of many essential enzymes involved in TCA and ETC were up-regulated (e.g., citrate synthase (CS), isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH2), ATP5B, HKII, PKM, and PFK) concomitant with the up-regulation of GLUT1 cell surface levels in CSCs (CD44+CD117+) compared to non-tumorigenic CD44+CD117− cells. This evidence concerns the gene CS and cancer.
