[13], KIM-1 has many features of an ideal biomarker of kidney damage: (i) It is detected only in the event of damage to the proximal tubules, (ii) it is possible to measure its concentration in urine non-invasively, and (iii) the concentration of this protein in urine correlates with its expression in the kidneys and the degree of their damage [13].
