Importantly, when diabetes-induced Drp1 overexpression was brought to near normal levels, the number of TUNEL-positive cells was significantly reduced in RTDs of diabetic Drp1+/− mice compared to that of diabetic mice (180 ± 29% of WT vs. 284 ± 28% of WT, p < 0.05; n = 6; Figure 5A–M).
