We hypothesized that these cells might be neutrophils, which are CX3CR1‐negative immune cells present at the lesion at the acute and subacute stages of permanent stroke, with the potential to internalize magnetic nanoparticles.[38, 45, 46] Therefore, we assume that NanoGd‐laden phagocytic cells are the main contributors of MR signal changes and that hypointense regions seen on NanoGd‐enhanced MRI correspond to areas with high immune phagocytic activity.
