Using these medical devices can contribute to the early detection of various diseases, and can improve the cost-effectiveness of the care, for example using C-reactive protein (CRP) tests for respiratory tract infection to reduce antibiotic use (Hunter, 2015) or using point of care screening for identifying patients at risk for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD; Thorn et al., 2012).
