In the initial results of the EMBLEM trial, 24 weeks of empagliflozin did not affect endothelial function as assessed by RHI in patients with type 2 diabetes and CVD [16, 17], suggesting that improvement of vascular function was unlikely to have been responsible for the early clinical benefits observed in the CVOTs with SGLT2 inhibitors. This evidence concerns the gene SLC5A2 and type 2 diabetes mellitus.
