MIF and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: Therefore, the comparably lower GluR2/3 expression in MIF motoneurons along with the absence of calcium-binding proteins (Eberhorn et al. 2005) could constitute one factor for the putatively higher vulnerability of MIF motoneurons as compared to SIF motoneurons, consistent with the observed degeneration of MIFs in ALS patients (Ahmadi et al. 2010; Tjust et al. 2017).
