Guidelines published by the American Diabetes Association (ADA) and the European Society for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) recommend either glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists or sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors as second-line therapies for patients with T2D on metformin monotherapy or as first-line treatments for patients with T2D at high-risk of cardiovascular events or seeking to minimize weight gain (Davies et al., 2018; Marx et al., 2021; Cosentino et al., 2020). Here, GLP1R is linked to type 2 diabetes mellitus.
