Despite the substantial reduction in GABRA1 mRNA in schizophrenia, positive correlations between GABRA1 mRNA and dopaminergic (TH and DAT) mRNAs did not differ diagnostically, suggesting that, although there may be less α1 available in the midbrain in schizophrenia, the normal link between the α1 subunit and dopamine synthesis and transport remains intact. This evidence concerns the gene GABRA1 and schizophrenia.
