SLC32A1 and schizophrenia: Taken together with the report of a reduction in inhibitory synapses in the midbrain in schizophrenia [78], we suggest that fewer inhibitory terminals may exist in the midbrain in conjunction with decreases in a key enzyme involved in GABA synthesis and vesicular GABA transporter, supporting the notion of less inhibitory control in the region of dopamine cell bodies in schizophrenia.
