NLRP3 and influenza: Hepatic ketogenesis, a process downstream of lipolysis that converts long-chain fatty acids into short chain β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) as a preferential fatty acid fuel during starvation or glucoprivic states, inhibits the NLRP3 inflammasome activation (Youm et al., 2015) and protects against influenza infection-induced mortality in mice (Goldberg et al., 2019).
