Based on the results from the SGLT2 inhibitor CVOTs and kidney outcome studies, the Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes organization modified their 2020 guidelines for the management of chronic kidney disease in patients with diabetes, leading to the following recommendation “...glycemic management for patients with type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease should include lifestyle therapy, first‐line treatment with metformin and an SGLT2 inhibitor, and additional drug therapy as needed for glycemic control”.12 This evidence concerns the gene SLC5A2 and diabetes mellitus.
