Histological examination of colon sections harvested from IL-10−/− mice colonized with H. hepaticus revealed pathology consistent with inflammatory bowel disease, including loss of goblet cells, inflammatory cell infiltration, and crypt elongation 14 days after H. hepaticus colonization, compared to that of WT mice of either genotype mock challenged with sterile tryptic soy broth (Fig. 1B). The gene discussed is IL10; the disease is inflammatory bowel disease.
