Key features of the immune response to the virus are lymphopenia (possibly caused by apoptosis via the P53-signaling pathway in T-lymphocytes [7], via angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE2) protein receptor) [8], and an increase in inflammatory cytokines (cytokine storm) such as interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) and interleukin (IL)-6 [9], which can result in multiple-organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), a major cause of death in COVID-19 [10]. This evidence concerns the gene IFNG and lymphopenia.
