Biotin is an essential vitamin playing its role in cellular carbohydrate, amino acid and lipid metabolism.1 Unlike bacteria, mammalian cell machinery does not produce biotin, therefore biotin is supplemented exogenously.1 There is evidence that expression of biotin receptors (BRs) is correlated with cancer.2 Among BRs, sodium-dependent multivitamin transporter (SMVT) is essential to deliver vitamins, like biotin, to cancer cells.3 Therefore, SMVT is a potentially useful cancer biomarker for tumor diagnostics.
