CCL2 and cancer: Several of these can be grouped into: (i) EC adhesion proteins, like intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM1), vascular cell adhesion molecule 1 (VCAM1), E-selectin and P-selectin, which are involved in the recruitment of leukocytes but also in the transmigration of cancer cells across the vessel wall; and (ii) chemokines, like interleukin-8 (IL-8 also known as CXCL8), monocyte chemotactic protein 1 (MCP1; also known as CCL2), stromal cell-derived factor 1 (SDF1; also known as CXCL12) and other factors which influence the recruitment and polarization of immune cells [3,6].
