In spite of no evidence indicating any abnormalities of Cx43 in genomes of individuals with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, the accumulating findings suggest that the functional abnormalities of hemichannels lead to severe cognitive dysfunction in schizophrenia via disorganization in neuro-glial networks and transmission dysfunction in specific regions [2,22,71,72]. The gene discussed is GJA1; the disease is bipolar disorder.
