IRF5 and systemic lupus erythematosus: Importantly, this study found that the expression of BANK1 40C in HEK293T cells led to reduced formation of the so-called sequestosomes, and, therefore, when expressed with TRAF6 and IRF5, BANK1 40C could not repress TRAF6-mediated IRF5 nuclear localization, leading to increased IRF5 activation and induction of type I interferon, important in the pathogenesis of SLE (Figure 1).
