SOD1 and infection: In addition, at 14 dpi in PVY-infected plants growing at 22 °C, we observed that superoxide dismutase (SOD, a biotic and abiotic stress-responsive protein, Table S3), which plays a vital role in protecting plants from reactive oxygen species (ROS)-mediated injury [35], was down-regulated in infected plants, which presumably means reduced protection against ROS damage [36] at this stage of infection.
