Laboratory investigations revealed elevated inflammatory markers (C-reactive protein (CRP)), 125 mg L−1 (normal, <6 mg L−1); serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), 184 U L−1 (normal range, 120–246 U L−1); and thrombocytopenia (68 × 109 cells per liter (normal range, 150–410 cells per liter)), confirmed on microscopy (Fig. 1b).
