IFNA1 and Zika virus infectious disease: While ZIKV-induced neuronal damage is well appreciated in the brain and retina, the impact of ZIKV on vessels is largely unknown although a few in vitro studies demonstrate ZIKV could infect and replicate in endothelial cells, break down endothelial barriers and impair endothelial cell lipid homeostasis [17, 20, 22, 37], and Garcez et al. reported reduction in the vasculature density and vessel branching in the brain from IFN-deficient mouse with congenital ZIKV infection and reduced retinal vascular network was displayed in one image of this article [12].
