Interestingly, decreased expression of A20 in diabetic patients and mice, as a result of high glucose-induced post-translational O-glycosylation that tags the A20 protein for subsequent ubiquitination and degradation in the proteasome, aggravates and accelerates atherosclerosis in ApoE-null mice rendered diabetic with streptozotocin (31). This evidence concerns the gene TNFAIP3 and atherosclerosis.
