Already in the 1990s, selectively blocking the interaction of β2 integrins with intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1) using antibodies against CD18/ICAM-1 or ICAM-1 antisense oligonucleotides showed promise by reducing inflammation and cell infiltration in 2,4,6-trinitrobenzenesulfonic acid (TNBS)-colitis in rats (12), dextran sodium sulfate (DSS) colitis in mice (13) or acetic acid-induced inflammation in rats (14).
