BACE1 and schizophrenia: Due to the normal physiological roles of BACE1 in the brain, complete inhibition or knockout of BACE1 results in fatal phenotypes and outcomes (Vassar, 2014), such as, increased BACE1 protein levels (Liu et al., 2019), worsened cognition and daily function (Egan et al., 2019), increased axon targeting errors (Rajapaksha et al., 2011), reduced myelination, endophenotypes of schizophrenia (Savonenko et al., 2008), and seizures (Hitt et al., 2010).
