Ruggieri and Polizzi (2003) proposed that the diagnosis of the homuncio would fit better with mosaic NF1 (Ruggieri & Praticò, 2015) rather than classical NF1 as the large fleshy mass (i.e., the plexiform neurofibroma) is solitary and there are no other NF1 stigmata either in the print or in the accompanying Latin text (Aldrovandi, 1642). The gene discussed is NF1; the disease is plexiform neurofibroma.
