Finally, gout shares 2 loci (out of 5 from [56, 57]) with levels of serum alpha-1-antitrypsin, an anti-inflammatory endogenous protease inhibitor (p = 1.0 × 10−6), providing a human genetic rationale for the use of alpha-1-antitrypsin-based therapeutics in acute gouty flares (as has been demonstrated to be efficacious in mice [58]). Here, SERPINA1 is linked to gout.
