DISC1 is considered a ‘historical’ candidate gene forSZ, whose relevance has been challenged by more recent unbiased genome-wideassociation studies (Farrell et al., 2015; Mathieson et al., 2012).Accumulating evidence now suggests that DISC is generally involved in braindevelopment and functioning through acting on numerous cellular processes, and as such, abnormal DISC1 expression may be a general risk factor formultiple psychiatric disorders rather than constituting a ‘SZ risk gene’(Facal andCostas, 2019; Niwa et al., 2016; Ryan et al.,2018). The gene discussed is DISC1; the disease is psychiatric disorder.
