In outer BCs, the key upstream components of the Hippo pathway (Crumbs [Crb], Kibra [Kib], Expanded [Ex], Merlin [Mer]) are found at sites of BC–BC contact (Lucas et al., 2013; Niewiadomska et al., 1999), where the pathway acts independently of the canonical downstream effector Yorkie to limit the activity, but not the recruitment, of the actin polymerization protein Enabled (Lucas et al., 2013). The gene discussed is NF2; the disease is breast cancer.
