Several studies have made an association between serum uric acid and metabolic syndrome [53, 54], suggesting it may have homogenous actions, such as activation of the sympathetic nervous system, renin-angiotensin system and increased levels of pro-inflammatory adipokines and cytokines, which confer an elevated cardiovascular risk through factors including raised heart rate, circulating blood volume and vascular resistance [55]. The gene discussed is REN; the disease is metabolic syndrome.
