In a severe periodontitis model developed in apolipoprotein E-deficient (ApoE-/-) mice with a hyperlipidemia, Liu X et al. showed that systemic infusion of human GMSCs not only attenuated the hyperlipidemia and systemic inflammatory responses but also promoted periodontal tissue regeneration as evidenced by increased alveolar bone height and new bone formation compared to the control groups (102). The gene discussed is APOE; the disease is periodontitis.
